The ‘Eagle’ collection of South Atlantic The ‘Eagle’ collection is not a simple collection; not “a–one-of-each-per-the Catalogue” collection. To quote a client, on receiving the catalogue, ‘The range, quantity and quality of the material is remarkable, as is the depth of knowledge of the owner, who must have assembled it over a lifetime.’ We couldn’t have put it better ourselves! Not only the fruits of research, in the form of the many plate varieties in the collection, but also the material that enabled the research is on offer. There is no shortage of watermark and other varieties, including many unlisted, as well as a fine range of local SPECIMEN handstamps extending to 1975. The major strength of the collection is in St Helena, with a remarkable 324 lots up to 2013, mostly in collector-friendly form but also with some more bulky offerings. There are 210 lots of Ascension material. The strongest area is the 1922-37 ‘Badge of the Colony’ issues of each, with a splendid range of listed varieties and an even more comprehensive range of the unlisted minor flaws. In addition there are interesting ranges of Falklands and Dependencies, British Antarctic Territory and a little Tristan. Collectors of any of these areas should make sure they see the catalogue; to quote a member of the stamp trade, “(the catalogue will) be an essential reference work for decades”
